Halfblood Chronicles

Shana was a wizard, the powerful and illegal child of a Human and an Elf, and fated to be the Elvenbane of legend. The Elves, who have used their magic to enslave humanity for hundreds of years, fear the Halfbloods as powerful enemies possessed of both Human and Elven magics. Unbeknownst to them, the mysterious shape-shifting Dragons have taken Shana in as an infant, and reared her to know her own power. Yet, in a world where Elves, Humans, Halfbloods, and Dragons tend to look after themselves and their own without regard to anyone else, Shana will have trouble rallying anyone to her cause except those few that feel a family tie to her. In the end, all the power in the world will mean nothing if she cannot make some honest allies. This was a great book in places, but it had a tendency to shift tones, even with the same point of view. I attribute this to the two-author syndrome. The other problem was the book's lengthy flashbacks, especially at the beginning. Only the first was stronly woven back into the story. The rest were just exposition in disguise. The overall tone of the novel was usually dark, with well-fleshed settings and characters. If you enjoy powerful twists on the standard fantasy themes, try this book.
